Poor But Sexy Magazine Article

Hi Everyone,

Please feel free to check out the new blog in Poor But Sexy Magazine: http://www.poorbutsexy.ca/the-artists-guide-to-self-publishing-part-i/

PBSHORIZONTAL-1

You wouldn’t be wrong to say that Robert Brodey, author of the political thriller, “Josef’s Lair” , and Natalia Zurawska, author of “I’m Not Making This Up”, a book of make-up tips for fashion newbies, come from different ends of the arts spectrum. One is an avid photojournalist and the other a talented hair and makeup artist.

What both of these authors had in common was the goal of writing a book and taking it public with or without an agent or publisher behind them. For the next two days, we will find out how they did it, what companies they chose to work with and what their results were. If you’ve ever wondered about self-publishing, stay tuned. – excerpt from article

Simple Make-Up Tips For Authors

i'mnotmakingthisup_nataliazurawska

I have been a professional makeup artist for the last 10 years. I absolutely love my career as well as making people laugh and smile.  I also love to read and write.

When I was starting out, I experienced many trials and tribulations and realized that there are so many problems that may be so easily resolved.  Whether it is beauty or production related, I have learned so much and love to share that wealth of knowledge with others.

Everyone loves simplicity, easy problem solving, looking and feeling their best as well as saving time and money. For that reason I wanted to provide some tips about how you can look and feel your best whether it’s for an author photo shoot, an in-person reading or a book signing appearance.

Often, author photos for the back or inside of books are done in black and white. And it might not at first be obvious of the subtle difference that photography in this two-toned medium might make. A great make-up tip to use with black and white photography is to use stone colours, beiges, browns and greys. Those colours tend to work best because in black and white, reds can come off looking extremely harsh.

Another great tip when getting head shots done is to focus on looking like yourself, only enhanced. The photos on a book can last a lifetime so it is great to look and feel like yourself.

Every woman has experienced buying a powder and have it shatter a day later. Argh!  Don’t throw it out. Collect as much of the powder as possible and put it back in the container. Spray rubbing alcohol until a paste is created. Leave the lid open for the makeup to dry. This also works well for any powder makeup such as eye-shadows, and blush. Tada! It is back together once it dries. The alcohol also sanitizes it. Just make sure to use 70% or over.

Easy, fun, simple!

My belief is that every woman should look and feel her best all while saving time and money. When you look great, you feel great and it radiates into all aspects of life.

The Best Makeup Artist Tools for OMP Members

Hi Everyone,

My name is Natalia Zurawska. I have been a professional makeup/hair/spfx artist for the last 10 years. There are so many amazing products on the market today. Here are just a few I could not live without. If you are a professional makeup artist, try these out – true time and money savers as well as great quality! I have included some great tips as well.

Enjoy!

Dermalogica’s Pre Cleanse Wipes

These amazing wipes are perfect for removing environmental pollutants, sunscreen, waterproof mascara and more. I like to use them on myself as well as on set. Infused with aloe, apricot oil, rice bran and Vitamin E , they nourish the skin and don’t clog pores. Use alone or add a little water to create a cleansing milk before fully washing your face. No artificial fragrance, colour or parabens. Comes in a package of 20 for $18.

www.dermalogica.ca

The Zuca Artist Backpack

The Zuca Artist Backpack is perfect for the artist on the go. The innovative design features 4 clear vinyl-lined pockets on the door panel to store small items. A very clever strap is perfect for storing alligator clips.

This amazing backpack also features 2 clear vinyl-lined Utility Pouches – (can accommodate up to 4) used for organizing all tools and products.

It includes a thermal pocket for a flat and curling iron so there is no need to wait for cool down. Built in straps secure the backpack to your Zuca rolling case. Even the straps are ergonomically designed and the back is padded.

The backpack is perfect to set up anywhere and transforms into a sleek workstation. The convenient strap holds the door open for easy access.

$139.00

www.zuca.com

Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage

I love the Secret Camouflage by Laura Mercier. It comes in a variety of tones perfect for every complexion. I also love that you can customize your colour because of the two-hue pans. It is perfect if you or talent get a bit of a tan or lose a little colour without having to get a new product. A little goes a long way and stays put all day with no creasing, drying or discoloration. Infused with chamomile, Vitamins A, C and E, it is perfect for even the most sensitive skin. Apply with a concealer brush and use your clean hand as a palette to mix desired shade. Apply to under eyes and blemishes by blending gently outwards. $38 for .26oz pans. Concealer brush $32

Best Tip*

Apply after foundation so you don’t wipe it away. If you are doing a dark smoky eye, it is best to apply shadow first and let the residual eye shadow fall. Clean off after a few minutes and apply concealer. It prevents the concealer and eye shadow from creating a messy mix.

$38.00

M.A.C Eye Shadow Palette

Every makeup artist as well as makeup lover should have one! The case size is 4.25’ by 7.5’ and contains 15 little circle containers to pop in the eye shadows which you can customize. I notice that some artists like to take out the “holding circles” and fit in many more eye shadows as the case is magnetic. Whatever floats your boat I personally like to keep them apart as I notice there is much less shattering and mixing of shades. Empty palette available at M.A.C stand alone stores $12.50. Each shadow $13.50 each. You can also get a free shadow for recycling 6 empty containers.

www.maccosmetics.com

Best Tips*

If you happen to get a regular pot eye shadow from M.A.C you can wiggle the little lip where you open it with a knife. Heat up a flat iron and pop the little pan and eye shadow on the heat checking every few seconds. Simply wiggle the eye shadow out if its plastic pan and pop into your palette. Voila!

You can use wax paper to protect your flat iron however I find it works better without, just keep an eye on it. Wipe your flatiron down with a wet wipe afterwards while it is hot by clamping it down and running it through a few times. It will get rid of any previous hair product residue as well as anything melted.

Clean the palette easily by spraying 70% rubbing alcohol. If any of the shadows have shattered a little, make a little paste with the alcohol and leave the lid open to dry. Clean around the edges with a q-tip or folded over paper towel.

A Variety of Mascara Wands

As a professional makeup artist, I have noticed it is not so much the formulation of the mascara unless it is waterproof but the brush that makes the biggest difference.

Some brushes give a very natural effect while others provide a lot of drama and depending on the look hence, it is great to have a lot of brushes on hand. Since it is unhygienic to use the same brush on many eyes, I cut the brush wands out of the new mascaras and wash gently after every use.

For brides and any type of sport/water involving shoots I love to use the Lash blast 24 hour mascara by CoverGirl. It stays put through sweat and tears and creates a beautiful natural look with defined lashes along with noticeably added volume and length. $10

www.covergirl.ca

For a major effect, I love the new “They’re Real” mascara by Benefit. The brush hugs each lash and saturates it so well making eyes pop. The effect is gorgeous and dramatic! $29

www.benefitcosmetics.com

Best Tips*

If you are out of eyeliner, gently swipe your eyeliner brush along the mascara wand and use it as liner in a pinch. Layer on for a defined look or smudge out using a q-tip.

Replace mascara every 3 months to prevent eye infection.

Never pump mascara in the tube – it just dries it out. Instead, swirl it in the tube.

Best Tips*

Keeping an ice pack or heat packet in your kit depending on the season and especially if you are shooting on location.

Makeup is expensive as well as fragile. Weather can effect the formulation. By keeping ice packs covered in a sandwich bag (to prevent condensation) or heat packets, this can greatly reduce the chances of any texture and quality changes. This works well in kits as well as personal makeup bags. Both are available at the dollar store. The interchangeable heat/cool pack works very well too.

I hope you have enjoyed my tips.

Wedding Beauty Do’s and Don’ts

Weddings are such amazing celebrations of love and unity, but your wedding will also be the most important beauty-focused day of your life. With all of the photos and video that will be shot on your wedding day, looking your best is key. Here are some of my favourite hair and makeup tips and tricks:

Wedding Beauty Do’s
When looking for wedding hair and makeup styles, inspiration can be anywhere. Keep in mind that your hair style should seem realistic. It’s also a good tip to arrange for a hair and makeup trial to ease a lot of stress on the day of the wedding.

  • It is best to go with a look that is similar to your natural hair style.
  • A more natural makeup look is also great if your skin reacts differently to more humid weather, typical of weddings that take place in the summer season.
  • Waterproof mascara is a must – especially if the tears start to flow. Waterproof eyeliner formulations are also a great idea.

There are dozens of beauty products out there to get you ready for your big day. Here are a few of my favourites:

  • If you have great skin, Hello Flawless by Benefit is for you. It is a powder that may be used wet or dry.  You can also spot apply in layers like a concealer.
  • If you need added coverage, Face Atelier Foundation is great. It has a primer built right in to keep makeup on all day and night. It also comes in a variety of tones for every ethnicity. The result is flawless skin. I like to apply it to eyelids as well to keep eye shadow on for hours.
  • I love the Climate Control hairspray by Tresemme. Hair stays put, yet can be brushed through and the shine is incredible.
  • The Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray by Tresemme is my one of my favourites. It not only protects your hair from heat, it tames frizzies and makes curls last longer and smells so good.
  • Covergirl 24 Hour Lashblast mascara is fantastic. It lengthens, adds volume and separates lashes while staying put all day and night. It washes off well with makeup remover – it’s a must have for any bride.

Wedding Beauty Don’ts

  • Don’t change your hair colour or cut it drastically right before your wedding.
  • Don’t get a wax days before your wedding. If waxing or laser hair removal is normal for you, schedule your appointment at least 3 days beforehand in case of an allergy or redness.
  • Spray tans are tricky and the last thing you want to do is look orange for your big day. If you really want a sun-kissed glow I would suggest a practice run before the wedding to make sure you like the colour.

Blooming Beauty Buzz: Hottest Spring Makeup Trends

After our incredibly long winter, spring is just around the corner. The trends for spring 2014 are much bolder than in the previous years sporting the bright shades of green, blue and violet.

  • Orange is the new “it” shade for lips.
  • Skin is dewy and fresh.
  • Low ponytails, wisps and braids are your go-to hair trends this season.

Here are my favourite beauty tips. Enjoy!

How to get the “dewy skin” look:

Dermalogica makes an amazing Cover Tint. Natural light-diffusing agents combined with Iron Oxides blur lines, brighten and moisturize skin, providing an even skin tone, while SPF 20 helps protect skin from sun damage. Comes in three shades that truly compliment almost any complexion. I always like to add a little dab to collar bones and where skin is exposed for a uniform look.

dermatologica-spf-20-cover-tint-makeup

Tip:
Apply cover tint first and add a little concealer to blemishes and under eyes. This prevents from rubbing away the concealer when applying a foundation. Use fingers for both applications, as the warmth promotes easy blending. When applying concealer, gently cover the imperfection and blend away the edges.

I love the concealer by Cover FX. The colours are vast for every ethnicity. The coverage is exceptional, as well as moisturizing, and lasts for hours.

cover-fx-cream-concealer-makeup

The application of a bright eye shadow or eye liner is key to having beautiful, eyes that dazzle.

A great way to get the look is to use a bright blue, green or violet shade as an accent. Apply just a thin trace of eyeliner along the eyelid or in the inner corners of the eyes. Mature women should avoid anything with sparkle. For an evening look, apply the shadow to the entire eyelid – looks gorgeous. To get the perfect look, blend upwards, making sure that eye shadow application is symmetrical and does not go above your eyelid. Darker variations of green, blue and violet look best.

Tip:
Wet an eyeliner brush and use eye shadow as eyeliner if you have none on hand.

Remember: you never want to have extremely dramatic eyes and lips together. Choose to focus on either eyes or lips, while keeping the other muted.

I love eye shadow quads by Clinique. With fun names like Galaxy for blues, On Safari for greens and Going Steady for purples, your eyes have never looked so gorgeous!

I also love that the palette comes with instructions for application.

If you prefer a more natural look, the Teddybear quad is simply stunning and looks great with a more orange or even natural toned lip.

clinique-eyeshadow-spring-makeup

Tip:
Apply a little concealer to eyelids to keep eye shadow on for hours.

For lips, orange is here to stay for spring! I love the new moisturizing jumbo lipsticks by Elizabeth Arden that come in two shades – coral reef and sunrise. Both are beautiful shades. The lipstick is a jumbo pencil that is incredibly moisturizing and comes with a sharpener.

elizabeth-arden-lipstick-makeup

For your mane, wisps and no fuss hair is in. I personally love the messy wavy, tousled look. For optimum results, spray dry hair with a protecting spray such as the Thermal Creations Heat Protecting Spray. It not only protects the hair from heat, but also reduces frizz, keeps the style and smells great. I love the little lock on the bottle as well to prevent skills.

tresemme-thermal-creations-heat-tamer-spray

Begin by parting hair to your liking. For large no-fuss waves, I love the Revlon Ceramic Jumbo Waver. It takes only a few minutes as you can take big strands of hair. Simply hold down and release. Finger tousle. You can either wear hair down or in a low ponytail. Secure with a clear elastic. For added pizzaz, hide the elastic with a thin strand of your hair by wrapping it around and securing with a matching bobby pin underneath. Finish with a spray. I love the Climate Control Hairspray by Tresemme. It provides great hold regardless of the weather, yet you can still brush through it.

All the best and Happy Spring!

Put a Lil’ Spring In Your Step – Beauty tips

Attention ladies, it’s spring already! Spring doesn’t only mean a lovely aroma, flowers and sunny days; it also means that there are new beauty trends coming up!

Natalia Zurawska has some beauty tips for you (from head to toe) which will help you through the spring time!
Enjoy!

Tip 1: Lips
Orange lips are really big for spring and look especially amazing on South Asian Skin tones.

elizabeth arden

Elizabeth Arden has come out with a Beautiful Jumbo Colour Gloss Stick, only available for a limited time. This has got to be one of my favorite makeup goodies yet and I hope it does end up staying in their line. The gloss stick is extra moisturizing providing vibrant colour and shine. It comes with a sharpener as well. Just perfection for the perfect pout!

Beautiful Color Gloss Stick by Elizabeth Arden
Beautiful Color Gloss Stick by Elizabeth Arden

Best Tips:

  • To keep lipstick on extra long, line your entire lip with the same colour of lip liner.
  • To prevent lipstick from bleeding, apply powder around the lip line to set.
  • Make sure to keep eye makeup more muted if lips are going to be vibrant.

Tip 2: Eyes
Blue, green and purple eye shadows and eyeliner are back! Do not be afraid, a lot has changed since the 80’s. For an added pop of colour, simply line your eyes, or apply only to the inner corners with a more neutral colour along the lid. Really bright eye shadow colours should be used as an accent for a day look. Darker shades of blue, green and purple may be applied to the entire lid like a smokey eye for a night on the town.

I love the eye shadow quad sets by Clinique. The colours are gorgeous, already matched and stay on for hours. I especially love the On Safari (green tones), Galaxy (blue tones) and Going Steady (purple tones)

Best Tips:

  • Make sure not to extend eye shadow into the brow bone.
  • Keep lips neutral if you are going for a dramatic eye look.
  • Apply concealer to eyelids before eye shadow application for lasting results.

The Tightline cake Eye Liner by Laura Mercier is a truly spectacular. You can activate it with water or with the Tightline Activator to keep it waterproof. Create a paste using the Laura Mercier flat brush and apply by wiggling in between lashes and inner eye line. With gorgeous shades such as Bleu Marine, Plum Riche and Forest Green, there is a colour for everyone. It also comes in more classic tones such as Charcoal Grey, Mahogany Brown, GunMetal Smoke and Black Ebony.

Tip 3: Body
I love the new cream by Soap and Glory. With major moisturizing ingredients such as shea, coconut bar, lime and almond oils, it nourishes post-winter skin leaving it smelling oh so fresh and rejuvenating. Kiwi juice water is also added. Yum!

Sugar Crush Body Butter

Tip 4: Hair
Dry shampoo is always great to keep on hand or in your purse. I love the travel size one by TRESemmé. TRESemmé volumizing dry shampoo has such a great citrus scent to pep you up all while freshening up your hair, adding volume and eliminating oil. It also helps keep hair colour with less washing. Simply spray on and brush through before styling hair.

Ontario Pharmacists Association

I recently had the pleasure of working with a very talented team to update the OPAs stock photo library and new website. As the saying goes, it takes a small village, and this project was no exception. On the client side, Betsy Nejat (Manager of Marketing and Partnerships), Lindsay George (Manager of Communications and Member Services), and Keith Ly (Graphic designer) were invaluable in charting the creative vision and handling much of the logistical considerations, including talent, pharmacists, and locations. The very talented team at Cossette designed the new website and marketing collateral that provided visual guidance throughout.

Helping on set were a bunch of great people that made each shoot fun and efficient. I was assisted by Maggie Walker, Jamie Rosenthal, and Gen Shapira. Make-up and hair was provided by the talented Natalia Zurawska (www.colourchameleon.com). Talent provided by Milo Casting (www.Milocasting.com).

Each shoot and pharmacy setting presented a particular set of challenges, largely because of the real-life locations. The pharmacies were open and busy, and like most dispensaries, provided little working room. Which meant hiding lights everywhere to create the clean, bright, and contemporary look the OPA was looking for.
