Poor But Sexy Magazine Article

Hi Everyone,

Please feel free to check out the new blog in Poor But Sexy Magazine: http://www.poorbutsexy.ca/the-artists-guide-to-self-publishing-part-i/

PBSHORIZONTAL-1

You wouldn’t be wrong to say that Robert Brodey, author of the political thriller, “Josef’s Lair” , and Natalia Zurawska, author of “I’m Not Making This Up”, a book of make-up tips for fashion newbies, come from different ends of the arts spectrum. One is an avid photojournalist and the other a talented hair and makeup artist.

What both of these authors had in common was the goal of writing a book and taking it public with or without an agent or publisher behind them. For the next two days, we will find out how they did it, what companies they chose to work with and what their results were. If you’ve ever wondered about self-publishing, stay tuned. – excerpt from article

The Best Makeup Artist Tools for OMP Members

Hi Everyone,

My name is Natalia Zurawska. I have been a professional makeup/hair/spfx artist for the last 10 years. There are so many amazing products on the market today. Here are just a few I could not live without. If you are a professional makeup artist, try these out – true time and money savers as well as great quality! I have included some great tips as well.

Enjoy!

Dermalogica’s Pre Cleanse Wipes

These amazing wipes are perfect for removing environmental pollutants, sunscreen, waterproof mascara and more. I like to use them on myself as well as on set. Infused with aloe, apricot oil, rice bran and Vitamin E , they nourish the skin and don’t clog pores. Use alone or add a little water to create a cleansing milk before fully washing your face. No artificial fragrance, colour or parabens. Comes in a package of 20 for $18.

The Zuca Artist Backpack

The Zuca Artist Backpack is perfect for the artist on the go. The innovative design features 4 clear vinyl-lined pockets on the door panel to store small items. A very clever strap is perfect for storing alligator clips.

This amazing backpack also features 2 clear vinyl-lined Utility Pouches – (can accommodate up to 4) used for organizing all tools and products.

It includes a thermal pocket for a flat and curling iron so there is no need to wait for cool down. Built in straps secure the backpack to your Zuca rolling case. Even the straps are ergonomically designed and the back is padded.

The backpack is perfect to set up anywhere and transforms into a sleek workstation. The convenient strap holds the door open for easy access.

Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage

I love the Secret Camouflage by Laura Mercier. It comes in a variety of tones perfect for every complexion. I also love that you can customize your colour because of the two-hue pans. It is perfect if you or talent get a bit of a tan or lose a little colour without having to get a new product. A little goes a long way and stays put all day with no creasing, drying or discoloration. Infused with chamomile, Vitamins A, C and E, it is perfect for even the most sensitive skin. Apply with a concealer brush and use your clean hand as a palette to mix desired shade. Apply to under eyes and blemishes by blending gently outwards. $38 for .26oz pans. Concealer brush $32

Best Tip*

Apply after foundation so you don’t wipe it away. If you are doing a dark smoky eye, it is best to apply shadow first and let the residual eye shadow fall. Clean off after a few minutes and apply concealer. It prevents the concealer and eye shadow from creating a messy mix.

M.A.C Eye Shadow Palette

Every makeup artist as well as makeup lover should have one! The case size is 4.25’ by 7.5’ and contains 15 little circle containers to pop in the eye shadows which you can customize. I notice that some artists like to take out the “holding circles” and fit in many more eye shadows as the case is magnetic. Whatever floats your boat I personally like to keep them apart as I notice there is much less shattering and mixing of shades. Empty palette available at M.A.C stand alone stores $12.50. Each shadow $13.50 each. You can also get a free shadow for recycling 6 empty containers.

www.maccosmetics.com

Best Tips*

If you happen to get a regular pot eye shadow from M.A.C you can wiggle the little lip where you open it with a knife. Heat up a flat iron and pop the little pan and eye shadow on the heat checking every few seconds. Simply wiggle the eye shadow out if its plastic pan and pop into your palette. Voila!

You can use wax paper to protect your flat iron however I find it works better without, just keep an eye on it. Wipe your flatiron down with a wet wipe afterwards while it is hot by clamping it down and running it through a few times. It will get rid of any previous hair product residue as well as anything melted.

Clean the palette easily by spraying 70% rubbing alcohol. If any of the shadows have shattered a little, make a little paste with the alcohol and leave the lid open to dry. Clean around the edges with a q-tip or folded over paper towel.

A Variety of Mascara Wands

As a professional makeup artist, I have noticed it is not so much the formulation of the mascara unless it is waterproof but the brush that makes the biggest difference.

Some brushes give a very natural effect while others provide a lot of drama and depending on the look hence, it is great to have a lot of brushes on hand. Since it is unhygienic to use the same brush on many eyes, I cut the brush wands out of the new mascaras and wash gently after every use.

For brides and any type of sport/water involving shoots I love to use the Lash blast 24 hour mascara by CoverGirl. It stays put through sweat and tears and creates a beautiful natural look with defined lashes along with noticeably added volume and length. $10

www.covergirl.ca

For a major effect, I love the new “They’re Real” mascara by Benefit. The brush hugs each lash and saturates it so well making eyes pop. The effect is gorgeous and dramatic! $29

www.benefitcosmetics.com

Best Tips*

If you are out of eyeliner, gently swipe your eyeliner brush along the mascara wand and use it as liner in a pinch. Layer on for a defined look or smudge out using a q-tip.

Replace mascara every 3 months to prevent eye infection.

Never pump mascara in the tube – it just dries it out. Instead, swirl it in the tube.

Best Tips*

Keeping an ice pack or heat packet in your kit depending on the season and especially if you are shooting on location.

Makeup is expensive as well as fragile. Weather can effect the formulation. By keeping ice packs covered in a sandwich bag (to prevent condensation) or heat packets, this can greatly reduce the chances of any texture and quality changes. This works well in kits as well as personal makeup bags. Both are available at the dollar store. The interchangeable heat/cool pack works very well too.

I hope you have enjoyed my tips.

Pointers for the Perfect Pout

Congratulations! You are getting married! Nothing says love like a kiss. To keep your pout perfect – here are some of the best tips! Enjoy!

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Whether you are a lipstick lover or a gloss girl – moisturized lips are always sexy.

*Best Tip

The night before, slough off any dry skin on your lips with an extra toothbrush. I always keep one in the bathroom just for lips after brushing my teeth. Apply a lip balm. Lips will feel like new by morning. Vaseline also works very well.

Nivea’s “A Kiss of Protection” features sunflower and jojoba oils as well as vitamin E and an SPF of 30 to keep your pout pristine.

Less is more

The more natural the colour and texture, the less fuss and worry about making sure your lips look perfect at all times especially after kisses, eating and drinking. I love M.A.C Lipglass in Prrr. The colour is gorgeous, natural and looks great on every skin tone.

Line your lips

If you are going to be wearing a vibrant lip colour, lining lips first will keep the colour on for much longer. Lip liner is also great if you want to change the shape of your lips by making them symmetrical or bigger. Apply the same colour lip liner (the dark liner and light lipstick which I call “oreo mouth” days are long gone.) to your entire lip. Blot. Then apply lipstick. A lip brush creates pristine results. Blot again. Touch up as needed.

*Best Tip

Use a concealer brush with face powder to line around the outside of your lips to prevent lipstick from bleeding.

I love the Rimmel London Eggagerate Automatic Lipliner. It keeps lipstick from bleeding, comes in a great variety of shades and is very long lasting without drying out your lips.

I love the Beautiful Colour Moisturizing lipsticks by Elizabeth Arden. These high pigment lipsticks come in such a beautiful array of shades last 12 hours while leaving lips soft and supple.

The only great stain – Lipstain!

Lip stain is great if you are looking for a sheer hint of colour that lasts for hours. I love the line by Benefit as it can be used for cheeks as well. Apply to the apples of the cheeks and lips with the little brush and blend in with fingers. May be layered for a more dramatic look too. Benetint (Berry), Cha Chatint (Peach/Coral), Lollitint and Posietint (Warm Pink) look great on all skin tones.

Use straws

Use straws as much as possible when it comes to drinking. I like to keep a few of the covered ones you can get from Starbucks in my purse, just in case.

I hope you have enjoyed these tips. For my blog, work, YouTube and new e-book “I’m Not Making This Up” please go to www.colourchameleon.com

Best Beauty Picks For Summer

http://anokhimedia.com/blog/best-beauty-picks-for-summer

Fall/winter makeup and beauty tips

I’ve been a professional makeup, hair and special effects artist for 10 years and recently published a makeup e-book featuring the best tips, tricks and techniques I have learned over the years, as well as some of my favourite products. I believe every woman should look and feel her most confident. However, the cold temperatures outside and the forced indoor heating can take a toll on your skin and hair. Here are some of my favorite tips to keep you looking and feeling your best this season.

1. When fall and winter weather set in, it’s time for a foundation and concealer change. At this point in the year, tans fade and a lighter shade of makeup is needed to match your skin tone. To find the best match, apply with fingers along your jaw line. Your foundation should blend seamlessly into your neck. Make sure to test it in outside light as well, since commercial lighting can distort colors.

I love Hello Flawless by Benefit because it comes in a variety of shades. You can apply it as a powder or wet for a heavier coverage. Use your finger to layer it as a concealer for areas that need extra coverage. It even contains an SPF of 15.

2. Stay moisturized! Johnson and Johnson Baby Oil Gel is extraordinary. I love the smell as well as the thick consistency — unlike baby oil there are no spills. Apply it in the shower and rinse off for baby soft skin. It comes in aloe vera and vitamin E, shea and cocoa butter and lavender formulations.

3. Blush does wonders! A little bit of color on the cheeks can wake you up when you’re feeling tired and brighten up a pale fall or winter complexion. I love the color selection and texture of Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Crème blush. You can also apply it to lips! For special offers from Elizabeth Arden check out http://verified.codes/Elizabeth-Arden

ceramide créme

4. Wind and cold temperatures can dry tresses out. Moroccan Oil Intense Hydrating Mask is the perfect solution for dry hair. Apply the moisturizing mask to your head and relax. Rinse it out after 10 minutes for amazing results. The smell is heavenly.

5. For any hair type, dry, cold weather and winter hats add frizz and make hair brittle. There is nothing better than TRESemme´Platinum Strength Heat Protecting Spray. This spray smells delightful while protecting and strengthening hair. Simply spray generously all over hair to tame frizz and give long-lasting results.

6. Lips are one of the first things to dry out during cool weather. For a perfect pout, slough off dry skin with a toothbrush (I have an extra one just for this). Apply Vaseline or your favorite lip balm — I love Burt’s Bees — and leave on overnight.

burt's bees

7. Darker lip colors are trendy in cold months (I love the shades by MAC). For lasting results, use a lip liner of the same shade as your lipstick or gloss, or one shade lighter, and fill in your whole lip. Next, apply your color. To prevent bleeding, use a cotton swab dipped in translucent powder and trace around your lip line.

MAC

8. For perfect feet, slough off any dead skin. In or right after the shower is best since softened skin is easier to remove than dry. The Ped Egg is perfect as it collects dead skin for easy disposal and includes a pumice stone at the bottom (just don’t be overzealous!). After scrubbing, apply a foot lotion such as Peppermint Foot Lotion from the Body Shop. For an even more luxurious feeling, put a small amount of the lotion into a glass bowl and heat it in the microwave until warm, testing it first before applying all over feet.

I hope you enjoy these tips and find them useful through the fall and winter season!
