Creating a Makeup Effect – One Model Place

diner_shot_with_hedleyPhoto by Matt Barnes, Westside Studio

Hi Everyone, I love creating different looks, hence I really love my career as a makeup/hair/spfx artist.

Although I have been involved in a number of great projects over the years, one of my recent favorites was a greaser-style shoot with the rock band, Hedley. Besides working with Hedley, one of the things that made this shoot so special was a top notch team including Matt Barnes (photographer), Courtney Boyd (producer), and Dwayne Kennedy (wardrobe stylist).

There is a lot that goes into the production of a large-scale photo shoot. Time is money and the shoot must run smoothly. Communication is very important, so budgets, looks, location and scheduling were all discussed at a pre-production meeting for this shoot took place. At the end of the day, we needed to put together a well-executed shoot and produce something awesome.

At the pre-production meeting, Matt Barnes explained the lighting, how the shots were going to be organized as well as what looks he liked for us to go with. From my end, I relayed to the producer my requirements that all of the models come with clean, dry hair, no makeup and no nail polish

The theme for this photo shoot was very “Greasers” inspired. Once learning about this, I researched a lot of 50’s looks that would compliment the concept. I also needed to go with great looks that could be done in the shortest amount of time with lasting power as there were 3 locations and some of the shots were outdoors. I watched the movie “Grease” for reference. On the shoot day, Dwayne, the models, Hedley, and Courtney all got organized. Since all the shots were group shots and everyone was a “hero” (no background talent), it meant we all had to work well and quickly as a team. Dwayne would take certain models and dress them while I started on hair. Read more…

Enjoy!

Poor But Sexy Magazine Article

Hi Everyone,

Please feel free to check out the new blog in Poor But Sexy Magazine: http://www.poorbutsexy.ca/the-artists-guide-to-self-publishing-part-i/

PBSHORIZONTAL-1

You wouldn’t be wrong to say that Robert Brodey, author of the political thriller, “Josef’s Lair” , and Natalia Zurawska, author of “I’m Not Making This Up”, a book of make-up tips for fashion newbies, come from different ends of the arts spectrum. One is an avid photojournalist and the other a talented hair and makeup artist.

What both of these authors had in common was the goal of writing a book and taking it public with or without an agent or publisher behind them. For the next two days, we will find out how they did it, what companies they chose to work with and what their results were. If you’ve ever wondered about self-publishing, stay tuned. – excerpt from article

Conceal and Cover – Make up fixes for Your wedding

Concealer is not only great for the face. If you are having a destination wedding and showing off a lot of skin, you want to look and feel your best all over the body as well. An old tattoo, minor imperfections, a bruise, scar can easily be covered.

Here are my top picks for a quick fix. Enjoy!

Cover Fx Cream Concealer

cover fx cream concealerconcealer brush

Cover Fx Cream Concealer is exceptional. The coverage is so smooth, even and very high in pigment. The concealer comes in a vast array of colours to match every skin tone. It covers tattoos and any other imperfections with ease. Powder in between layers and set to finish. I also love the Cover FX concealer brush. It can easily blend out edges as well as be used to stipple concealer for perfect coverage.

If you have an uneven scar, adding a little of the Cover FX primer before concealer application will help even the skin. Bonus – SPF 30 is added perfect for any hot climate.

Blooming Beauty Buzz: Hottest Spring Makeup Trends

After our incredibly long winter, spring is just around the corner. The trends for spring 2014 are much bolder than in the previous years sporting the bright shades of green, blue and violet.

  • Orange is the new “it” shade for lips.
  • Skin is dewy and fresh.
  • Low ponytails, wisps and braids are your go-to hair trends this season.

Here are my favourite beauty tips. Enjoy!

How to get the “dewy skin” look:

Dermalogica makes an amazing Cover Tint. Natural light-diffusing agents combined with Iron Oxides blur lines, brighten and moisturize skin, providing an even skin tone, while SPF 20 helps protect skin from sun damage. Comes in three shades that truly compliment almost any complexion. I always like to add a little dab to collar bones and where skin is exposed for a uniform look.

Tip:
Apply cover tint first and add a little concealer to blemishes and under eyes. This prevents from rubbing away the concealer when applying a foundation. Use fingers for both applications, as the warmth promotes easy blending. When applying concealer, gently cover the imperfection and blend away the edges.

I love the concealer by Cover FX. The colours are vast for every ethnicity. The coverage is exceptional, as well as moisturizing, and lasts for hours.

The application of a bright eye shadow or eye liner is key to having beautiful, eyes that dazzle.

A great way to get the look is to use a bright blue, green or violet shade as an accent. Apply just a thin trace of eyeliner along the eyelid or in the inner corners of the eyes. Mature women should avoid anything with sparkle. For an evening look, apply the shadow to the entire eyelid – looks gorgeous. To get the perfect look, blend upwards, making sure that eye shadow application is symmetrical and does not go above your eyelid. Darker variations of green, blue and violet look best.

Tip:
Wet an eyeliner brush and use eye shadow as eyeliner if you have none on hand.

Remember: you never want to have extremely dramatic eyes and lips together. Choose to focus on either eyes or lips, while keeping the other muted.

I love eye shadow quads by Clinique. With fun names like Galaxy for blues, On Safari for greens and Going Steady for purples, your eyes have never looked so gorgeous!

I also love that the palette comes with instructions for application.

If you prefer a more natural look, the Teddybear quad is simply stunning and looks great with a more orange or even natural toned lip.

Tip:
Apply a little concealer to eyelids to keep eye shadow on for hours.

For lips, orange is here to stay for spring! I love the new moisturizing jumbo lipsticks by Elizabeth Arden that come in two shades – coral reef and sunrise. Both are beautiful shades. The lipstick is a jumbo pencil that is incredibly moisturizing and comes with a sharpener.

For your mane, wisps and no fuss hair is in. I personally love the messy wavy, tousled look. For optimum results, spray dry hair with a protecting spray such as the Thermal Creations Heat Protecting Spray. It not only protects the hair from heat, but also reduces frizz, keeps the style and smells great. I love the little lock on the bottle as well to prevent skills.

Begin by parting hair to your liking. For large no-fuss waves, I love the Revlon Ceramic Jumbo Waver. It takes only a few minutes as you can take big strands of hair. Simply hold down and release. Finger tousle. You can either wear hair down or in a low ponytail. Secure with a clear elastic. For added pizzaz, hide the elastic with a thin strand of your hair by wrapping it around and securing with a matching bobby pin underneath. Finish with a spray. I love the Climate Control Hairspray by Tresemme. It provides great hold regardless of the weather, yet you can still brush through it.

All the best and Happy Spring!
