Did you know that great quality makeup brushes make all the difference in how your makeup goes on and stays on? They feel soft, have a great shape and the bristles don’t shed. So how do you find and care for the best ones so they do the job right? You get some advice from a makeup pro, like Natalia Zurawska, author of the e-book I’m Not Making This Up.
Natalia says that when you’re shopping for yours, look for sturdiness in the handle (breaking off in your hand when your mid-application is never pretty) and connection with bristles (neither are flyaway hairs all over your face). Also, keep in mind that you don’t necessarily need to spring for brushes made of real hair. Synthetic brushes have come such a long way and the quality is just as good as natural bristles. The choice is yours.
Warning: You have to keep your brushes in pristine condition or they won’t continue to do the job. Wash them weekly with a mild shampoo for personal use, and condition them for extra softness. Then, rinse well and wring out the water by gently following the shape of the brush. Lay flat to dry.
Pro Tip: You should wash your brushes after each use.
Now that you know how to care for your brushes, let’s get shopping. Whether you are a makeup maven or go for the natural-but-not-really look, there are a few must-have brushes you need to ensure your makeup will last.
1 of 4 BRUSHES YOU NEED FOR MAKEUP APPLICATION
What It Does: A powder brush is great for setting makeup. It may be used with mineral powder, pressed powder, loose powder, highlighting powder, bronzer and even blush.
How to Use:
Apply the lightest colour first such as highlighter, then powder which matches your skin tone and bronzer/contour last. This prevents cleaning the brush in between and the colour combinations create a beautiful result.
- Highlight is used to accentuate.
- Contour is used to define or minimize.
- Bronzer should be applied to the forehead, nose and chin where the sun would naturally hit your face.
The Best Brush: Check out the powder brush by Eco Tools. This soft brush is perfect for all powder application. It is also animal cruelty free and available for a fraction of the cost of higher end brushes with the same results. Love the bamboo handle as well.
